Lake Wörthersee, Carinthia, Austria

The region
Carinthia is the southernmost part of Austria, a country of lakes, forested hills and mountains. Wörthersee is the largest lake in Carinthia, about 16.5 km long and up to about 85 m deep, set among forested hills. Resort towns line its northern shore, and in July and August the surface water can reach around 25 degrees Celsius.
Pörtschach, on the northern shore about 14 km west of Klagenfurt, became a summer resort in the nineteenth century, and the composer Johannes Brahms spent three summers there, from 1877 to 1879. Klagenfurt Airport (KLU) is the closest airport.

What the region offers
- On the water: sailing, stand up paddling, kayaking and swimming, and in summer passenger boats between the largest settlements.
- On foot and by bicycle: the Wörthersee circular hiking trail is about 55 km long, hilly and mostly wooded. A cycle path runs along the northern shore.
- Villages and places: Pörtschach, Velden at the western end of the lake, Maria Wörth on a peninsula on the southern shore, Klagenfurt at the eastern end, and Pyramidenkogel with its observation tower.
- Day trips: Carinthia lies where Austria, Italy and Slovenia meet.
