Terms

Beit Din
A rabbinic court. The local Beit Din sets and upholds the kashrut standards of a community, and we work with the local rabbinic authorities so that what we supply conforms to them.
Chag, Yom Tov
A Jewish festival. A Yom Tov kitchen is planned for capacity, redundancy and the days when nothing can be switched on.
Chalav Yisrael
Dairy produced under Jewish supervision from the time of milking. All cheese and dairy products on KCT journeys are certified chalav Yisrael.
Eruv (plural eruvin)
A boundary that allows carrying within a defined area on Shabbat. It is part of Shabbat planning for a property.
Glatt
A term for meat held to a stricter standard. KCT journeys use Glatt Mehadrin meat, exclusively.
Kashering
Preparing a kitchen, appliance or utensil for kosher use. We kasher the kitchen or galley before a journey begins.
Mashgiach (plural mashgichim)
A kashrut supervisor who oversees that the kitchen works to the agreed standard. Mashgichim work as part of the KCT team.
Mevushal
Wine that has been heated so that it keeps its kosher status when handled by others. Every wine we serve is certified kosher, and most are not mevushal.
Minyan
The quorum of ten adults needed for certain communal prayers. We arrange minyanim from the group or with a local community.
Sefer Torah (plural Sifrei Torah)
A Torah scroll. We can bring one in with the correct handling and storage.
Seder (plural sedarim)
The festive meal on Pesach. Private sedarim are produced in full for any group size.
Shomer Shabbat (plural shomrei Shabbat)
Someone who observes Shabbat. Our service staff are shomrei Shabbat.
Sukkah
The temporary booth used on Sukkot. We design, build and weatherproof it.
