Private Sukkot abroad

A built sukkah, a full Yom Tov kitchen, a minyan arranged, and chol hamoed days somewhere the family would want to be anyway.

A built sukkah in a European courtyard, set for the evening meal

The sukkah is the longest lead item

Families imagine the sukkah as the decorative part of a Sukkot abroad. It is the part with the longest lead time and the most ways to fail. We design, build and weatherproof it: structure, schach, flooring, lighting on a timer and heating, with a plan for rain. The single decision that determines whether it works is made months earlier, when the property is chosen for its courtyard: a flat, unobstructed area with nothing overhanging it, close to the kitchen and sheltered from the wind.

The kitchen runs in parallel

A Yom Tov operation across the full chag needs capacity, redundancy and a plan for the days when nothing can be switched on: warming, blechs, urns, timers and refrigerated storage for several days of prepared food. This planning happens in September, so that October can be spent at the table.

Choose the region for the days in between

Chol hamoed is half the trip. Alsace and New England work for the days in between, and an alpine chalet terrace can serve as a straightforward sukkah in early October.
